The story

Launched in 2016 to follow the 1 Series M Coupe, the M2 grew from the F87's N55 to the S55 in Competition and CS. The G87 shares M3/M4 architecture and uses the S58 twin-turbo six.34

    M2 launches with M3/M4-inspired axles

    Sales start in April 2016. The N55 M2 gets 500 Nm on overboost, M3/M4-inspired aluminum axles, forged 19-inch wheels and an Active M Differential.34

  2. 2018

    S55 replaces the N55 in Competition

    Europe's new emissions rules trigger an engine swap: the M2 Competition gets the M3/M4-derived S55 twin-turbo six and 405 hp.45

  3. 2020

    First CS: 444 hp and a carbon roof

    The M2 CS adds a carbon-fiber hood and roof. Adaptive M suspension reaches the M2 range for the first time.46

  4. 2022

    G87 revealed for BMW M's 50th

    The second M2 generation combines M3/M4-derived powertrain and chassis technology with rear-wheel drive and an optional six-speed manual.47

  5. 2023

    Production shifts from Leipzig to Mexico

    April brings the new generation to market. Assembly moves from BMW Group Plant Leipzig, Germany, to BMW Group's San Luis Potosí plant, Mexico.47

  6. 2024

    2025 M2 climbs to 473 hp

    The 2025 model starts its production phase-in in August 2024 with 473 hp, a 20 hp increase, and BMW Operating System 8.5.8

  7. 2025

    7:25.5 at the Nürburgring

    Jörg Weidinger sets a compact-car lap record in the new M2 CS, beating the previous mark by 8 seconds. Its S58 makes 523 hp.19

  8. 2026

    G87 M2 CS production ends at 2,882

    The final G87 M2 CS is built on July 29. The US receives 770 of the 2,882 cars; 407 of those US cars wear Velvet Blue.9

  9. 2026

    First M2 M xDrive arrives

    The 2027 M2 M xDrive launches in late summer with 473 hp and an eight-speed automatic; 0–60 mph takes 3.6 seconds.10

How to spot one

Look for

  • F87: bulging wheel arches and gaping front intakes wrap a short coupe body.419
  • F87: M gill details decorate the flanks.420
  • Both generations have four exhaust tips.37
  • G87: frameless kidney grilles with horizontal bars sit above nearly rectangular lower intakes.7
  • G87: vertical rear reflectors, a rear diffuser and inset exhaust pairs.7

  1. 2018: M2 Competition

    The Competition adds a larger black grille and double-arm mirrors; its rear badge is dark.14

  2. 2023: G87

    The new generation brings a frameless, horizontal-bar grille and three nearly rectangular lower air intakes.47

  3. 2025: exterior

    Black exhaust tips and black badges with silver borders become standard; bright-silver wheels join a much wider paint palette.8

  4. 2025: cabin

    A flat-bottomed steering wheel has a red center stripe; iDrive 8.5 brings digital climate controls and fewer physical buttons.8
