The story

Created in 2014 to separate BMW's 1 Series coupe and convertible, the 2 Series wore an even number for two doors. Its two-door coupes stayed rear-drive based; the Active Tourer became BMW's first front-drive car.23

    1 Series two-doors become the 2 Series

    The F22 coupe goes on sale in March. It and the F23 convertible replace the E82/E88 1 Series two-doors, with production at Leipzig.4

  2. 2014

    Active Tourer brings front-wheel drive

    The F45 Active Tourer becomes BMW's first front-wheel-drive model, taking the family into compact MPVs.2

  3. 2015

    Convertible and seven-seat Gran Tourer

    The convertible launches in February; its roof cycles in 20 seconds at up to 50 km/h. The seven-seat Gran Tourer follows in June, 21 cm longer than the Active.45

  4. 2016

    M2 coupe and 225xe hybrid arrive

    The N55-powered M2 reaches buyers. April brings the 225xe Active Tourer, pairing a 1.5 L three-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor.56

  5. 2019

    F44 Gran Coupe: four doors, front drive

    Revealed in October 2019, the F44 uses UKL2 front-drive architecture rather than F22 coupe hardware; worldwide sales start in March 2020.27

  6. 2021

    G42 production moves to Mexico

    G42 production starts at San Luis Potosí, Mexico, in September. F22/F23 production ends in 2021; the replacement has no manual or convertible.24

  7. 2022

    U06: mild hybrids and 90 km PHEV range

    The second-generation Active Tourer launches with 48V mild hybrids. Its 230e plug-in hybrid offers a 14.2 kWh battery and 90 km of WLTP electric range.89

  8. 2025

    M2 CS: 7:25.5 at the Nürburgring

    Jörg Weidinger sets the compact-car record on the 20.823 km lap, eight seconds faster. Official attempts use calibrated timing, a notary and TÜV checks.1

Look for

  • F22 coupe: long hood, short overhangs and a cabin set far back.15
  • F22/F23: L-shaped rear lamps reach well around the rear fenders.420
  • G42 coupe: individual round headlamps flank a horizontal kidney grille.21
  • Active Tourer is a tall five-door MPV; Gran Tourer extends the body for a third seat row.25
  • F44 Gran Coupe: four frameless doors beneath a low roofline.11

    Active/Gran Tourer facelift: taller, wider kidney grilles, C-shaped black intake surrounds and twin tailpipes on four-cylinder versions.10

    Four-door Gran Coupe uses front-drive-based underpinnings; the earlier two-door coupe is rear-drive with an inline-six.3711

    The E82 predecessor is shorter, narrower and slightly taller than the F22 2 Series coupe.4
