The story

BMW split its 3 Series coupes and convertibles into the 4 Series. Both generations include a Gran Coupe liftback. The G22/G23/G26 generation uses CLAR; its Gran Coupe underpins the electric i4.34

    Detroit concept, Frankfurt debut

    January's Detroit concept leads to the F32 coupe's September Frankfurt unveiling; first-generation production runs July 2013–September 2020.45

  2. 2014

    F33 and F36 broaden the family

    The F33 hardtop convertible launches in January; the F36 Gran Coupe debuts at Geneva in March. The 300 hp six-speed manual 435i clocks 5.2 seconds to 60 mph in testing.567

  3. 2015

    100 ZHP coupes salute the E46

    The 2016 435i ZHP Coupe Edition honors the E46 ZHP package: 100 cars, 335 hp and a mechanical limited-slip differential.8

  4. 2016

    B48/B58 bring 430i and 440i badges

    The N20 428i and N55 435i give way to the B48 430i and B58 440i; the US adopts the new names for model year 2017.59

  5. 2017

    LED facelift and firmer suspension

    New LED headlights, taillights and bumpers accompany cabin updates; coupe and Gran Coupe models receive stiffer suspension.5

  6. 2020

    G22 adds a 48V-assisted M440i

    October brings the G22 coupe. The US M440i xDrive pairs a 382 hp B58 turbo six with a 48V mild-hybrid system.310

    G23 soft top; G26 Gran Coupe

    US sales of the G23 convertible start in March with a soft top about 40% lighter than the old hardtop; the G26 Gran Coupe follows in August.31112

  • First-generation Coupe: low, flowing roof and frameless side glass ending in a Hofmeister kink.1
  • First-generation Coupe: side vents sit just behind the front wheel arches.1
  • Second-generation Coupe: tall twin kidneys reach the bumper's base, flanked by slim headlights.1022
  • Gran Coupe: four frameless doors, a stretched roof and a lift-up rear hatch.612
  • Second-generation Gran Coupe: flush door handles and a pronounced spoiler where the roofline ends.12

  1. 2017 facelift

    First generation: reshaped bumpers, LED headlights, sweeping LED taillights and chrome-bordered audio and climate controls.514

  2. 2017 US model year

    First-generation 430i and 440i replace 428i and 435i, with new engines behind the changed badges.59

  3. 2021 Convertible

    The second-generation Convertible switches from the previous folding hardtop to a fabric soft top.11

  4. 2025 Coupe / Convertible

    Arrow-shaped front light signatures arrive; laser-accented taillights are standard on M440i and optional with Shadowline on 430i.23

  5. 2025 Gran Coupe exterior

    Grille mesh turns matte silver, front LEDs gain arrow-shaped signatures, and adaptive LED-equipped cars receive laser-accented taillights.24

  6. 2025 Gran Coupe cabin

    A two-spoke standard wheel or flat-bottom M Sport wheel joins fewer physical buttons, touch climate controls and iDrive 8.5.24
