The story

Built to challenge the Mustang for 1967, Camaro shared its F-body platform with Pontiac's Firebird. The original Z28 used a 290-hp, 302-cubic-inch V8 to fit Trans-Am's 305-cubic-inch limit.15

  1. 1966

September 29: Camaro goes on sale

Sales begin for 1967. The SS's 350 is Camaro-exclusive that year and rated at 295 hp.15

  2. 1970

    Second generation: 360 gross hp

The Z/28's 350 LT-1 brings 360 gross hp. Emissions-driven compression cuts follow, then the 1972 move to net ratings changes the yardstick.67

  3. 1982

    A hatchback and a four-cylinder

    The third generation sheds nearly 227 kg and offers a 2.5 L four. Z28 gets a 145-hp carbureted V8 or 165-hp, automatic-only Cross Fire.18

  4. 2002

    F-body production stops

The last fourth-generation Camaro is built August 27. Slow sales, a shrinking sports-coupe market and excess plant capacity end the run.13

  5. 2009

    2010 revival on Zeta

Oshawa in Canada builds the revived Camaro. Its 3.6 L V6 rises from 312 hp for 2011 to 323 hp with the 2012 LFX.19

  6. 2014

    Z/28: 505 hp and 1.06 g

    The Z/28 combines a 505-hp, 7.0 L LS7 with spool-valve dampers. Testing yields 4.0 seconds to 60 mph and 1.06 g of lateral grip.110

  7. 2015

Alpha cuts more than 91 kg

Revealed May 16 for 2016, Alpha cuts more than 91 kg with similar engine and equipment. Engines offer 275 hp (turbo four), 335 hp (V6) or 455 hp (SS V8).12

  8. 2017

    7:16.04 at the Nürburgring

Bill Wise laps the Nordschleife in a ZL1 1LE, beating the regular ZL1 by 13.6 seconds. The track package is introduced for the 2018 model year.2

  9. 2023

Production ends; 2024 gets the send-off

Production ends December 14. For 2024, the panther-badged Collector's Edition marks the finale; ZL1 Garage 56 Edition production is capped at 56.2
