The story

The M4 took over from the M3 coupe and convertible when BMW split off the 4 Series. Both F82/F83 and G82/G83 use twin-turbo straight-sixes; the F82 became more capable and exciting after a troubled debut.23

    M3 two-doors become the M4

    The F82 coupe and F83 convertible launch with a 425-hp S55 twin-turbo six. The coupe reaches 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds manual or 4.1 with M-DCT.2

  2. 2016

    Competition retunes the chassis

    Early M4s could be difficult in the wet. From March, the Competition Package adds 19 hp, stiffer springs, retuned dampers and a remapped differential.34

    Water injection and a 7:28 lap

    BMW announces 700 M4 GTS cars with water injection, 493 hp and 600 Nm, plus a claimed 7:28 Nürburgring Nordschleife lap.25

  4. 2017

    CS bridges Competition and GTS

    The M4 CS bridges Competition and GTS with 453 hp, carbon-fiber hood and roof, natural-fiber door panels and OLED taillights.26

  5. 2020

    F82 ends; G82 steps up to 503 hp

    The first generation ends in June. The G82 coupe is unveiled with 473 hp standard and 503 hp Competition, ahead of a March 2021 market launch.27

  6. 2021

    M xDrive reaches the M4

    M xDrive reaches Competition models, a first for the M4. The G83 convertible debuts with a soft top, Competition xDrive and an eight-speed automatic.278

  7. 2022

    543-hp CSL sheds 109 kg

    The two-seat M4 CSL loses 109 kg. Its 1,000-car run starts in July, with a claimed 7:20.2 Nordschleife record for a production BMW.9

  8. 2024

    2025 xDrive rises to 523 hp

    For 2025, Competition xDrive coupe and convertible rise to 523 hp. New headlights, laser taillights and iDrive 8.5 arrive as production starts in March.10

  9. 2025

    CS runs 0-60 mph in 3.0 seconds

    The 543-hp, all-wheel-drive M4 CS records 3.0 seconds to 60 mph and 1.05 g average cornering grip in tests. Rear seats and adjustable front backrests return.11

How to spot one

Look for

  • F82: a raised hood center, swollen arches and deep front air intakes.16
  • F82: forked door mirrors and quad exhaust pipes.16
  • G82: an oversized double-kidney grille dominates the nose.4
  • G83 convertible: a fabric roof replaces the F83's folding metal hardtop.24
  • G82: paired exhaust tips are chrome, or black chrome on Competition models.7

  1. 2017 (F82/F83)

    LED headlights and 3D LED rear lamps arrive; hexagonal adaptive lights are optional. Inside: illuminated seat emblems and double dash stitching.213

  2. 2025

    New headlights use vertical arrow-shaped LED elements as both daytime lights and turn signals.10

  3. 2025

    Laser-lit rear-lamp graphics reach the whole range, using technology introduced on the CSL.10

  4. 2025

    A flat-bottom steering wheel with a red top marker arrives; the Curved Display runs iDrive 8.5.10
