The story

Introduced in 1972 to replace the New Class sedans, BMW's executive family now spans eight generations. Four-cylinder beginnings led to the V10-powered M5, while the eighth generation added the battery-electric i5.145

  1. 1972

E12 starts the three-digit naming era

The 520 and 520i replace the New Class sedans, introducing a naming scheme whose first digit identifies the series and last two indicate displacement.46

  2. 1981

E28 angles the console toward the driver

The second generation introduces the driver-facing console and optional ABS. In 1983, the 524td becomes BMW's first diesel car.7

  3. 1988

E34 opens the wagon, AWD and V8 chapters

The third generation brings the family's first wagon, all-wheel drive and V8 engines. In 1992, the M5 Touring joins the range.16

  4. 1995

    E39 makes aluminum suspension central

Aluminum spreads through the fourth generation's suspension. The 1998 M5 introduces a V8 to the badge, paired exclusively with a six-speed manual.8

  5. 2003

    E60 brings iDrive; its M5 gets a V10

The fifth generation adds iDrive and a head-up display. Its 2005 M5 introduces V10 power, with SMG III or a manual transmission.5

  6. 2010

F10 adds eight speeds and hybrid power

Sedan, Touring, long-wheelbase and F07 Gran Turismo branches define the sixth generation. The 2012 ActiveHybrid 5 introduces hybrid power.3

  7. 2017

G30 combines CLAR and plug-in power

Sales begin in February. The G30 adopts the 7 Series' CLAR platform and offers the 530e plug-in hybrid; its F90 M5 introduces all-wheel drive.19

  8. 2023

    G60 introduces the all-electric i5

The eighth generation is revealed in May and launches in October, offering combustion engines alongside the family's first all-electric drive.110

  9. 2024

M5 goes hybrid with 717 hp

Unveiled in June for 2025, the M5 combines a turbocharged V8 and electric motor with an eight-speed transmission and M xDrive all-wheel drive.2

How to spot one

Look for

  • E12: large windows above a low beltline.18
  • E39: paired round headlights sit behind shared glass covers.16
  • G30: the headlight housings extend inward to meet the kidney grille.19
  • G60: nearly vertical LED elements form the daytime running lights.10
  • G60: look for an embossed 5 at the base of the rear roof pillar.10

Year by year

  1. September 1976

E12 facelift: wider taillights, a side-mounted fuel door and a raised hood center emphasizing the kidney grille.4

  2. 1992–1994

E34 V8 models introduced wider grilles in 1992; from 1994, that treatment spread to other models.13

  3. 2001 model year

E39 facelift: angel-eye headlight rings and LED taillights. In the US, 530i replaced 528i and 525i joined the range.1114

  4. March 2007 / 2008 model year

E60 facelift: revised headlights, taillights and front bumper give later cars subtly different detailing.5

  5. 2020 / 2021 model year

G30 facelift: slimmer headlights replace octagonal daytime-light outlines with simpler L shapes; the kidney grille becomes sharper.9

Don’t confuse it with

  • BMW 5 Series with M Sport Package

The new M5 has flared arches and an embossed M5 rear-pillar logo. Regular 5 Series models can also wear an optional M Sport Package.210

  • BMW New Class 2000

The 2000 has rectangular headlights, except on US cars; the first 5 Series uses double headlights.1820
