The story

Previewed by the plug-in hybrid 2012 Concept Active Tourer, the F45 became BMW’s first front-wheel-drive car. Its Mini-related UKL2 underpinnings helped maximize cabin room within a compact footprint.134

    The F45 debuts at Geneva; production starts at Leipzig in July. Launch choices are the 218i, 225i and 218d.35

    The 225xe plug-in hybrid debuts at Frankfurt, pairing a petrol-powered front axle with an electrically driven rear axle.45

    F45 facelift adds a dual-clutch gearbox

    From March, the F45 gets a seven-speed dual-clutch option, a new grille and larger tailpipes; four-cylinder models receive twin exhaust outlets.356

    225xe battery grows to 9.7 kWh

    From July 1, the 225xe gets a denser 9.7 kWh battery without growing its pack. Electric range rises to 50–53 km under WLTP.5

    U06 revealed; Gran Tourer ends

    U06 is unveiled in October; BMW keeps two rows and declines a new Gran Tourer as compact three-row MPVs lose popularity.3

    Five-seat sequel launches in the UK

    UK orders open in February with 220i and 223i mild hybrids plus the 218d diesel. Around 90% of new Active Tourer sales are expected in Europe.27

  • Short, tall MPV proportions stand apart from the longer, lower shapes of most BMWs.4
  • F45: look for the rear side-window kink and L-shaped taillights.313
  • U06: oversized kidney grilles and door handles flush with the body.389
  • U06 plug-in hybrids add a charging flap on the left front fender.39
