The story

Built to challenge BMW and Mercedes coupes, the S5 introduced Audi's B8 architecture. Its original recipe paired a 4.2-liter V8 with a six-speed manual and quattro all-wheel drive.134

    Audi's first B8 model

    The four-seat S5 coupe arrives with a 354-hp 4.2-liter V8 and a six-speed manual.1235

  2. 2012

    125 cars bid the V8 farewell

    America's 4.2 Special Edition signs off the V8 coupe with Daytona Grey paint, 19-inch Rotor wheels and a manual or Tiptronic.6

  3. 2013

    333 hp, supercharged and still manual

    The coupe trades its V8 for a supercharged V6. With the six-speed manual, its tested 4.8-second run to 60 mph matches the earlier V8.1

  4. 2016

    B9: turbo V6, 500 Nm, eight speeds

    Shown in June, the new S5 puts its 3.0-liter V6's turbo inside the V and adopts an eight-speed automatic.37

  5. 2017

    Sportback reaches North America

    North America gets the five-door S5 Sportback for the 2018 model year; its U.S. release comes in mid-2017.3

    Sportback: 4.3 seconds to 60 mph

    The 2018 S5 Sportback records 4.3 seconds to 60 mph and averages 0.95 g of lateral acceleration in instrumented testing.8

How to spot one

Look for

  • B8: a chain of LED running lights wraps around each bi-xenon headlamp.3
  • B8 V8: paired exhaust tips sit at each side of the rear bumper.13
  • B9 Coupe: rippled hood creases frame a raised center section.314
  • B9 Sportback: a curling roofline hides a large rear hatch.314
  • 2020 S5 TDI: 4 round exhaust tips; the regular A5 uses trapezoidal finishers.9

    LED taillamps join the B8 range.3

  2. 2013 (B8.5)

    The grille gains clipped top corners, headlights get a more complex LED pattern, and rectangular fog lights replace round ones.2

  3. 2017 (B9)

    B9 brings a larger one-piece grille, redesigned headlights and hood, and sharper body creases.3

  4. 2024–present (B10)

    The 2-door bodies disappear; the hatchback sedan has smoother flanks, while Europe also gets an Avant.310
