The story

Audi created the A5 as a four-seat grand tourer, returning to the coupe market in 2007 after its predecessor ended in 1996. Moving the front differential ahead of the clutch helped bring the axle forward and improve weight balance.12

    Audi returns to the coupe market at Geneva with the 3.2 FSI A5 and 4.2 FSI V8 S5.12

    Cabriolet and Sportback widen the family

    The fabric-roof Cabriolet replaces the A4 Cabriolet; the Sportback adds four frameless doors and goes on sale in September.1

  3. 2010

    RS5: 444 hp at 8250 rpm

    The 4.2 FSI V8 arrives with a seven-speed S tronic and a crown-gear center differential.1

  4. 2016

    B9 moves to MLB evo

    The redesigned coupe uses lighter, stronger, more aluminum-intensive architecture; its wheelbase grows 13 mm.13

    A5 Coupe: 5.0 seconds to 60 mph

    Instrumented tests record 0–60 mph in 5.0 seconds for the Coupe, 5.3 for the Sportback and 5.6 for the Cabriolet.45

    S5 TDI brings an electric compressor

    Europe's S5 Coupe and Sportback pair a 3.0 TDI with an electric compressor and 48-volt electrics, delivering 700 Nm.6

  7. 2024

    A4 becomes A5; US two-doors bow out

    The new A5 Sedan and Avant replace the A4 on PPC. In the US, Coupe and Cabriolet stop after model year 2024; Sportback continues for 2025.78

  8. 2025

    A5 e-hybrid: up to 110 km electric

    Sedan and Avant plug-ins offer 295 or 362 hp from a 2.0 TFSI plus electric motor; the stronger version reaches 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds.9

  9. 2026

    RS5 plug-in hybrid reaches 630 hp

    The RS5 Sedan and Avant plug-in hybrids deliver 825 Nm and reach 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds, with Dynamic Torque Control.10

How to spot one

Look for

  • Original xenon-equipped Coupe: a strip of eight daytime-running LEDs beneath each headlight.223
  • Original Sportback: four frameless doors and a long fastback roof, with a rear hatch.1
  • Second-generation Coupe: a wider, shallower grille and more strongly sculpted wheel arches.36
  • 2024 Sedan and Avant: slim headlights and a continuous, sculpted light strip across the rear.7

Year by year

  1. 2012 facelift

    Grille gains clipped upper corners; headlights gain wavy lower edges and LED running lights circling the projector instead of underlining it.1924

  2. 2012 facelift

    Rear lamps gain optional continuous LED strips; inside are new steering wheels and white-lit displays.1924

  3. 2016 redesign

    Second generation: a shallower, wider grille, bolder wheel arches, a sculpted hood and thinner, wider rear lamps.36

  4. 2019–2020 facelift

    A flatter, wider honeycomb grille gains slits above it; the front bumper has larger intakes and a pronounced lower blade.6

  5. 2019–2020 facelift

    Inside, a 10.1-inch MMI touchscreen replaces the rotary pushbutton controller.6

    A4 replacement becomes A5 Sedan and Avant; the Sedan's hatch includes the rear window, and a continuous light strip spans the tail.7
