The story

The Audi 80's replacement arrived in 1994 and gave the Volkswagen Group its first five-valve-per-cylinder 1.8-liter engine. B9 later cut over 100 kg with MLB Evo architecture.234

    B5 replaces the Audi 80

    The A4 debuts in October 1994 and starts production in November, carrying the Audi 80's lineage into a new name.35

  2. 1995

    More than 272,000 sold

    The A4 becomes a bestseller in its first year of production, with sales exceeding 272,000 during 1995.1

  3. 2000

    B6 brings Multitronic

    B6 debuts on October 10. Its 1.9 TDI reaches 128 hp, while front-wheel-drive versions gain the Multitronic continuously variable transmission.3

  4. 2004

    B7 production begins

    B7 production starts in 2004; the subsequent 2005.5 update replaces the 1.8 turbo with a 2.0-liter unit and enlarges the V6 to 3.2 liters.36

  5. 2007

    B8 moves onto MLB

    The fourth generation launches in 2007. B8 adopts the MLB platform, while Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm share A4 production.13

  6. 2009

    211 hp and 6.5 seconds to 60 mph

    The 2.0T quattro delivers 211 hp and about 350 Nm; its tested 6.5-second 0–60 mph run beats the 2008 2.0-liter A4 by over a second.7

  7. 2015

    B9 saves over 100 kg

    B9 debuts in late 2015. MLB Evo saves over 100 kg versus its predecessor; Virtual Cockpit and smartphone mirroring join the cabin.24

  8. 2019

    7.5 million built; B9 facelift

    At its silver jubilee, 7.5 million A4s have been built. The facelift adds a 10.1-inch touchscreen; five engine variants use 12-volt mild hybrids.148

  9. 2025

    Production ends; B10 A5 takes over

    After a 1994–2025 production run, the A4 hands over to the B10 A5, offered as a sedan and Avant.34

Look for

  • B5: wedge profile, slim headlights and an integrated rear spoiler.313
  • B6: a smoothly folded trunk edge, with rear lights forming part of its top line.3
  • B7: a sharp side crease runs the car's length; rear lights extend onto the trunk lid.315
  • 2008 redesign: Singleframe grille with white LED daytime lights.1721

    Front indicators move into the headlights and taillights turn all-red; the earlier bumper has a divided lower grille.22

  2. 2002 B6 update

    The 187-hp 1.8 Turbo version uses a red T on the trunk badge.3
