The story

Audi created the A1 to challenge MINI with the build quality and technology of its bigger cars. The three-door debuted at Geneva in 2010; the second generation switched to five-door Sportback only.134

    metroproject quattro goes hybrid

    At Tokyo, the A1's plug-in hybrid preview paired a 1.4-liter turbo driving the front wheels with an electric motor driving the rears.1

    Geneva debut, Polo underpinnings

    The three-door arrived on PQ25, shared with the Volkswagen Polo Mk5 and SEAT Ibiza Mk4, targeting young, affluent city buyers.1

  3. 2011

    Five-door Sportback debuts

    The five-door Sportback debuted at the Tokyo Motor Show; export-market sales followed in early 2012.1

  4. 2012

    A1 quattro: 333 in Glacier White

    The 252 hp 2.0 TFSI special drove all four wheels through a six-speed manual, with some 600 parts added or revised.12

  5. 2014

    S1 pairs a manual with quattro

    The 228 hp S1 offered a six-speed manual, quattro and a multilink rear axle in both three-door and Sportback forms.156

  6. 2015

    Facelift brings three-cylinder engines

    The facelift brought 1.0 TFSI and 1.4 TDI triples, a 148 hp cylinder-deactivating 1.4, and a 189 hp 1.8 TFSI replacing the 182 hp 1.4.357

  7. 2018

    Five doors, MQB A0 and Martorell

    The second generation moved to SEAT's Martorell plant in Spain: five-door Sportback only, with MQB A0 shared by the Volkswagen Polo VI and SEAT Ibiza 6F.48

  8. 2019

    citycarver lifts the A1

    The citycarver raised the body by 35 mm and added an off-road look. In May 2022, the same variant became the allstreet.8

  9. 2026

    Production ends without a successor

    The last A1 was built in April. Total output reached 1,389,658, with Audi ending the line to concentrate on larger cars.18

How to spot one

Look for

  • First generation: clipped upper corners on the single-frame grille.5
  • First generation: rear lights are completely housed in the hatch.5
  • Second generation: three flat slots sit directly below the hood's leading edge.11
  • Second generation: broad, sloping rear roof pillars and side creases that rise rearward.11
  • citycarver/allstreet: a raised body and only two slots above the grille.8

Year by year

  1. 2012

    The first-generation Sportback adds rear doors and can have a contrast color over the whole roof, rather than just the roof line.13

  2. 2015 facelift

    Revised headlights mark the facelift; in France, LED rear lights start at Ambiente trim.7

  3. 2018 second generation

    The second generation switches to five doors only, grows 56 mm longer and gains three hood-edge slots above a low, wide grille.811

  4. 2019 citycarver

    The citycarver adds a raised stance, black wheel-arch extensions and a two-slot nose.48

  5. 2022

    citycarver becomes allstreet; the rear carries allstreet lettering.814

Don’t confuse it with

  • Audi A1 S line

    A genuine first-generation S1 has four exhaust outlets and its own front and rear bumpers; S line is also a trim on ordinary A1s.15

  • Audi A1 quattro

    White turbine wheels and two polished tailpipes distinguish the limited A1 quattro from the S1's four outlets.15
