The story

Ford and Volkswagen formed a joint venture in 1991 to share large-MPV development costs. Palmela built two Sharan generations, from the Mk1's removable seats to the Mk2's floor-stowing EasyFold system.145

  1. 1995

    Geneva debut, Palmela production

The original Sharan premiered on March 9; Palmela built it alongside its sister model, the Ford Galaxy.1

  2. 2000

    New face and a 201-hp six-cylinder

The Mk1 got a new nose, tail and cabin; a 2.8 V6 replaced the original VR6, with six-speed manuals standard across the range.26

  3. 2008

    BlueMotion stretches the gearing

The Mk1 United BlueMotion used a 138-hp 2.0 TDI, longer fourth-to-sixth gears and aerodynamic tweaks to claim 6.0 L/100 km.7

  4. 2010

    Clean-sheet Mk2, sliding doors

Only the sun visors carried over. Sliding doors and EasyFold arrived; the 138-hp 2.0 TDI claimed class-best economy at 5.4 L/100 km.48

  5. 2015

Euro 6, App-Connect and active safety

The Mk2 gained Euro 6 engines and App-Connect, plus standard post-collision braking and newly available ACC and city emergency braking.459

  6. 2016

Seven-speed DSG and 2,400 kg towing

    The Mk2's 181-hp, 380 Nm 2.0 TDI paired 4MOTION with a seven-speed DSG and could tow 2,400 kg.10

  7. 2019

Euro NCAP penalizes a detached door

Retested under updated criteria, the Mk2 earned four stars. A side door detached in the pole impact, drawing an occupant-ejection penalty.1112

  8. 2021

    Sharan leaves the UK

The Mk2 left the UK market but remained on sale elsewhere in Europe.4

  9. 2022

    Production ends in Portugal

Production stopped in Portugal in October, bringing the second generation's run to an end.4

How to spot one

Look for

  • Original first generation: a Ford Mondeo Mk1-style nose and a Volkswagen Passat B4-style tail.4
  • First generation: hinged rear doors; second generation: sliding rear doors.413
  • Later first generation: indicators in the mirrors and chrome-ringed rear lamps.121

Year by year

  1. 1998

First generation: mirrors adopted from the Golf replaced the early design; the dashboard was redesigned.2

  2. 2000

First generation: a new nose and tail brought clear-lens headlights and chrome trim; the cabin gained new fabrics and finishes.1

  3. 2004

First generation: indicators moved into the mirrors, the grille gained chrome, and the rear lamps acquired chrome rings.121

  4. 2010

Second generation: rear doors now slide; the replacement is longer, wider and lower than the first generation.4

  5. 2015

Second generation: LED rear lights are the outside giveaway; inside, look for a new steering wheel and touchscreen system.22

Don’t confuse it with

  • Ford Galaxy (first generation)

The early twins share most bodywork; headlights, grille and taillights carry the main styling differences.24

  • SEAT Alhambra (first generation)

On the 2005-updated Alhambra, look for the centered 'Alhambra' lettering on the tailgate.24

  • SEAT Alhambra (second generation)

Check the badges on these near-identical twins; facelifted Alhambras have horizontal grille slats instead of the earlier vertical ones.1316

Against its rivals

  • Sharan vs BMW 118d Gran Tourer

    CO2 emissions lower is better
