The story

Europe’s Rapid filled the Fabia–Octavia gap with a roomy, budget-minded liftback and Spaceback hatch. China got a sedan; India’s separate Rapid used the Volkswagen Vento. The European liftback packed a 550 L trunk.13

    Rapid 130 gains five speeds

    The Garde name gave way to Rapid. A five-speed manual and new trailing-arm rear axle joined the 130; 0–100 km/h took 17 seconds.4

    MissionL preview; India's Vento twin

    MissionL previewed the European design at Frankfurt; India launched its own Vento-based Rapid in November.15

  3. 2012

    Paris launch, 550 L trunk

    The European liftback debuted in Paris between Fabia and Octavia, using familiar VW components to deliver a roomy cabin at a budget price.16

  4. 2015

    European Euro 6 engine overhaul

    All engines gained stop-start and energy recovery. A 1.4 TDI triple replaced the low-output 1.6; diesels now made 89 or 114 hp.7

  5. 2017

    1.0 TSI replaces the 1.2 four

    The European facelift brought 94 or 108 hp 1.0 TSI triples, plus bi-xenon headlights and LED daytime running lights.89

  6. 2019

    Scala takes over in Europe

    The Scala succeeded the Rapid in Western and Central Europe, while the Rapid name continued in China and Russia.1

    India swaps 1.6 MPI for 1.0 TSI

    The 108 hp, 175 Nm triple brought a six-speed manual rated at 18.97 km/L; a six-speed torque-converter automatic followed.1011

  • European liftback: sedan profile with a hatchback tailgate.3
  • Spaceback: shorter rear overhang and a more upright tail than the liftback.116
  • Spaceback option: glass roof, spoiler and extended rear glass form a black band.8
  • Pre-facelift Indian sedan: Fabia-like nose, Vento-like rear and different taillights.5
  • Classic Rapid/Garde: two-door fastback coupe body.2
