The story

Developed in-house for Soviet villagers and farmers, the Niva arrived in 1977 with a monocoque body, coil springs, independent front suspension and a locking center differential.134

    April 5: Niva production begins

    The original 1.6 pairs permanent four-wheel drive with low-range gearing, a locking center differential and 235 mm ground clearance.1

  2. 1983

    Right-hand drive reaches Britain

    UK imports began with left-hand-drive Nivas in November 1978; the right-hand-drive VAZ-21212 followed in February 1983.1

  3. 1994

    1.7 liters, carburetor or injection

    The VAZ-21213 keeps a carburetor; the 21214/1.7i adopts injection. An extended tailgate and vertical taillights update the body.1

  4. 2002

    Niva becomes Lada 4x4

    The original gains the Lada 4x4 badge as a General Motors joint venture builds the separate five-door Chevrolet Niva.3

  5. 2020

    Mark Key restarts UK imports

    After official UK imports ended in 1997, Mark Key's left-hand-drive Nivas return in late 2020 following a type-approval pause.25

  6. 2021

    The original returns as Niva Legend

    January brings the Niva Legend name for the original; the former Chevrolet Niva had become the Niva Travel in December 2020.1

  7. 2023

    ABS and Euro-5 return for 2024

    Production of the 2024 Niva Legend begins in December 2023, with ABS and Euro-5 emissions control restored across every trim.6

  8. 2025

    First production Niva Sport

    Sales open April 5 for the Sport: a 16-valve 1.6 with 122 hp, 0–100 km/h in 11.8 seconds and a 162 km/h top speed.7

  9. 2026

    1.8 liters and a driver airbag

    Classic's driver airbag joins single-lever transfer control, a reinforced mounting area and galvanized hood, roof and tailgate.8

How to spot one

Look for

  • Boxy silhouette, round headlights and conspicuously projecting bumpers.12
  • The original three-door has short overhangs and a stubby, two-box body perched on tall wheels.11
  • Early rear lamps are horizontal; facelifted cars pair vertical lamps with a deeper tailgate.1

Year by year

  1. Early 1980s

    Less chrome around the grille and rocker-panel edges; mirrors change to black metal.1

  2. 1993–1994

    Vertical rear lamps replace horizontal ones; a deeper tailgate carries the plate and uses a simple plastic handle.1

  3. 1995 UK

    Cossack gains a Rover-designed grille and soft front nudge bars; Hussar retains the original 1977 trim.2

  4. By 2021

    A revised dashboard and new switchgear update the cabin.5
