Made to return Jaguar to compact luxury sports sedans, the S-Type put Mark 2-inspired curves over DEW98 underpinnings shared with the Lincoln LS. The parts sharing caused a press backlash.1234

    X200 debuts in Birmingham

    Revealed on October 20, this was Jaguar's first all-new sedan since Ford took over in 1989.23

  2. 1999

    March showroom launch

    March brings the new sedan to showrooms, with 3.0-liter AJ-V6 and 4.0-liter AJ-V8 engines.56

  3. 2002

    Supercharged 4.2-liter R arrives

    The R adds a 400 hp supercharged V8 and its own CATS adaptive damping tune.37

  4. 2003

    Six-speed automatic and new cockpit

    For the 2003 model year, a ZF six-speed automatic joins a redesigned dash and console; an electric parking brake replaces the hand lever.2

  5. 2004

    Aluminum hood, twin-turbo diesel

    The facelift adds an aluminum hood and a 2.7-liter twin-turbo diesel: 206 hp, 434 Nm and quieter running than BMW's 535d.38

  6. 2005

    Diesel gains a particulate filter

    In Germany, the 2.7-liter twin-turbo diesel gains a factory-fit, maintenance-free particulate filter.9

    Pigoli wins Italian Superstars

    Massimo Pigoli takes the Italian Superstars Championship with the Jaguar Dealers Team's S-Type R.10

    2008-model preview: R grille for all

    Revealed at Bologna, the 2008 model year spreads the R's bumper and mesh grille across the range; UK trims become Spirit, XS, SE and R.11

  9. 2007

    291,386 built; final car is an R

    An S-Type R closes production on September 18 after 291,386 cars; the XF succeeds the S-Type.23

How to spot one

Look for

  • Four round headlights sit in raised housings that swell out of the hood.13
  • Launch cars have a shield-shaped grille filled with vertical bars.13
  • A sweeping roof and curved side windows recall the Mark 2 and original S-Type.13
  • A long crease runs from behind the headlights, below the door handles, to the rear lights.18
  • The rear quarter panels pinch inward into pronounced haunches.13

  1. 1999–2002

    A U-shaped center console identifies the early X200 cabin.2

  2. 2003 model year

    A revised dash and looped console arrive, with a grille-mounted Jaguar badge and an electric parking-brake switch.2

  3. 2004 facelift

    Reshaped front and rear aprons and remodeled taillights accompany the switch to an aluminum hood.2

  4. 2005 3.0 / Sport Package

    The 3.0's standard wheels grow from 16 to 17 inches; Sport Package wheels grow from 17 to 18 inches.15

  5. 2008 model year

    The R bumper and mesh grille spread to every trim; the R gains standard 19-inch Barcelona wheels.11

  6. 2008 model year colors

    Emerald Fire replaces Jaguar Racing Green.11
