The story
Aimed at first-time Jeep buyers and paved roads, the 2007 Compass upset traditionalists with its Dodge Caliber roots. A Renegade-based second generation arrived in 2016; the third moved to STLA Medium in 2025.45

How to spot one
Look for
- 2007 Compass: round headlights, a seven-slot grille and angular wheel openings.1
- 2007 body: raised black plastic ridges run along the outer edges of the roof.1
- Second generation: a narrow black grille integrates the headlights, echoing the Grand Cherokee.4
- Third generation: closed seven-slat grille, clamp-shaped headlights and protective side cladding.12
- Third generation: look for the rear X light signature and illuminated Jeep logo.12
Year by year
- 2011
First-generation facelift swaps round eyes for a mini-Grand Cherokee face, LED taillights and revised wheels.26
- 2017 (US)
Two bodies carry the 2017 model year: older hatchback-like shape versus new slim black grille with integrated headlights.4
- 2019 (European diesels)
Second-generation European diesels switch the exhaust outlet from right to left to fit SCR and AdBlue hardware.8
- 2022 (US)
The makeover brings a junior Grand Cherokee exterior and an upgraded cabin with richer-looking materials.411
- 2025 (third generation)
A longer wheelbase meets short overhangs; the dash gains a 16-inch touchscreen and passenger grab handle.412
Don’t confuse it with

Jeep Grand Cherokee Jeep Grand Cherokee
Second-generation Compass deliberately echoes a shrunken Grand Cherokee; its smaller body is the clue.6
