The story

Hyundai created the Sonata in 1985 as a more luxurious Stellar to challenge the Daewoo Royale. Its name comes from music; eight generations made it Hyundai's longest-running passenger model.26

  1. 1985

    Stellar roots, Cortina underpinnings

The original targets Korea's executive-car buyers, using Mitsubishi four-cylinder engines and a rear-drive Ford Cortina platform.12

  2. 1988

Y2 brings front drive and U.S. exports

The front-drive Y2 launches in South Korea in 1988. U.S. sales begin in early 1989, bringing the Sonata to American buyers for the first time.126

  3. 2005

    Sonata production reaches Alabama

Montgomery starts production. The 2006 LX V6's 40,000-mile test logs 23 mpg, no repairs and a 6.7-second run to 60 mph.67

  4. 2011

    274-hp turbo, 10Best and a hybrid

    A 274-hp turbo four replaces the V6; gas models earn Hyundai's first 10Best. A lithium-polymer Hybrid joins; U.S. sales reach 230,605 in 2012.18910

  5. 2015

Eco: seven gears, 6.7 seconds to 60 mph

    The 2015 range adds sound insulation; Eco pairs a 178-hp 1.6 turbo with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, reaching 60 mph in a tested 6.7 seconds.1112

  6. 2016

First plug-in: 27 miles on electricity

The 2016 Plug-in Hybrid combines a 9.8-kWh battery, 27 miles of electric range and 202 hp. A 240V charger replenishes it in under three hours.113

  7. 2019

    Eighth generation brings Digital Key

The 2020 Sonata offers smartphone Digital Key. Its Hybrid combines 192 hp with a six-speed automatic and offers an optional solar roof.1415

The facelift introduces a Seamless Horizon front lamp, H-shaped rear lights and a curved display with two 12.3-inch screens.16

How to spot one

Look for

  • 1988–1993: rear bodywork partly covers the tops of the rear wheels.26
  • 2011: coupe-like roof, a chrome spear to the headlights and a crease diving toward the front wheel.21
  • 2020: a catfish-like nose with hood-edge chrome strips that glow as running lights.414
  • 2020: a rear LED strip joins the brake lights, with small fins along the taillights.14

Year by year

  1. 1996

The Sonata III facelift reshapes the bumpers and lamps; the front bumper incorporates the grille.26

  2. 2002 model year

Peanut-shaped headlights and a conventional grille arrive; the rear license plate moves onto the trunk lid.16

  3. 2009 model year

A chrome 3-bar grille, projector headlights and revised taillights appear; Limited gains 10-spoke wheels.6

  4. 2015

The rounded nose and flamboyant grille give way to a restrained face; the dashboard loses its swooping shapes.11

  5. 2017 New Rise (Korea)

The grille gains a curved cascading design; on adaptive-cruise cars, the radar cover merges into the H emblem.26

Don’t confuse it with

  • Volkswagen CC

The 2011 Sonata has a chrome spear reaching the headlights and a side crease dropping toward the front wheel.21

  • Honda Accord

On the 2006 Sonata, look for Hyundai's flying H in the grille.7
