The story

Created for American tastes, Hyundai’s first SUV arrived for 2001 wearing the name of Santa Fe, New Mexico. It helped the brand’s revival, then grew from a compact into a midsize SUV across five generations.14

  1. 2001

Hyundai’s first SUV finds US buyers

Named for Santa Fe, New Mexico, the compact SUV arrived for the 2001 model year. Demand in the US soon forced Hyundai to increase production.15

  2. 2007

Second generation grows a third row

The larger second generation brought optional third-row seats and 185-hp 2.7-liter or 242-hp 3.3-liter V6s.16

  3. 2010

Six speeds, new engines, five seats

The US refresh brought 2.4-liter four-cylinder and 3.5-liter V6 engines plus six-speed gearboxes; the optional third row disappeared.1

  4. 2013

    Sport fours and a long-body V6

    The two-row Sport offered 190-hp 2.4-liter or 264-hp turbo 2.0-liter fours; the longer three-row Santa Fe replaced Veracruz with a 290-hp 3.3-liter V6.78

  5. 2016

    Antarctica, there and back

Patrick Bergel took a modified 2.2-liter diesel from Union Camp to McMurdo and back in December: almost 5,800 km in 30 days.2

  6. 2018

Fourth generation watches the back seat

The fourth generation arrived with ultrasonic Rear Occupant Alert to detect movement by children or pets in the rear seats and warn a departing driver.5

  7. 2021

    226-hp hybrid, eight-speed diesel DCT

The 1.6-liter turbo hybrid delivered 226 hp. SmartStream 3.5-liter V6 and 2.2-liter diesel engines arrived, the diesel with a wet eight-speed DCT.910

  8. 2022

Plug-in hybrid: 50 km of EPA EV range

The 261-hp PHEV brought 12.4 usable kWh, a 3.6-kW charger and 50 km of EPA EV range; highway testing returned 25 mpg versus the hybrid’s 31.11

  9. 2024

    Boxy reboot, three rows standard

A boxy fifth generation brought a bigger cabin, larger tailgate opening and standard third row. AWD EPA city/highway: hybrid 35/34 mpg, turbo 20/28.121314

How to spot one

Look for

  • First generation: bubble-like front fenders, a snouty grille and a noticeably sloped rear hatch.14
  • 2021 refresh: a broad grille flows into stacked lamps, with T-shaped daytime running lights.10
  • 2021 rear view: connected taillights and a full-width reflector strip incorporating the turn signals.10
  • 2024: boxy shape, H-shaped headlights, an extra-wide tailgate and unusually low rear lamps.1322

Year by year

  1. 2005

First-generation facelift changed the grille, rear lamps and rear bumper; Australian cars gained body-colored bumpers.1

  2. 2006

First-generation LX became Limited with the first trim badge; black Limiteds could have matching cladding instead of gray.1

  3. 2007

Second generation lost the lower-body cladding and separately opening tailgate glass.1

  4. 2010

Second-generation facelift added a gridded grille, red rear-lamp covers with chrome and five split-spoke alloys.1

  5. 2024

Fifth generation switched to a boxy profile, H-shaped headlights and very low rear lamps to allow a wider tailgate.131922

Don’t confuse it with

  • Land Rover SUVs

On the 2024 Santa Fe, check for H-shaped headlights and rear lamps set unusually low.131422
