The story

Fiat joined the Mazda MX-5's roadster revival in 1995 with a brief to keep costs down. Its Barchetta, Italian for "little boat," put a shortened Punto platform and front-wheel drive beneath an open body.1234

    Stola builds a European clinic model

    Fiat commissioned Stola to build a red styling model with opening doors, then took it around Europe to test reactions.5

  2. 1995

    Geneva debut: Fiat's roadster return

    The Barchetta debuted at Geneva in March, returning Fiat to fabric-roof sports cars a decade after the 124 Spider retired.45

  3. 1996

    Club Italia: just 6 cars

    The Club Italia run lasted from October to December and was made for an exclusive Italian owners' club.6

  4. 1998

    Limited Edition: burgundy or beige

    The Limited Edition paired 2,000 gray cars with burgundy hoods and matching leather seats; 500 green cars used beige.4

  5. 2000

    CF3 engine meets ECE F3 rules

    CF3 production introduced the ECE F3-compliant 188A6 engine. Lido and Riviera added a third brake light.167

  6. 2001

    Milano adopts an electronic throttle

    The Milano paired a new ECU and drive-by-wire throttle with Elisir and Jag blue replacing Midnight blue.7

  7. 2002

    Maggiora bankruptcy interrupts production

    Maggiora's May bankruptcy interrupted the run; Fiat subsequently transferred production to Mirafiori.1

  8. 2003

    New bumpers, new Mirafiori home

    The facelift combined bulkier front and rear bumpers with round fog lights; production switched to Mirafiori in Turin.18

  9. 2005

    June brings the final Barchettas

    Production ended in June after a decade; roughly 57,800 Barchettas had been built.1

How to spot one

Look for

  • Flush chrome door handles pop out when one end is pressed.3
  • High-arched fenders and sculpted side creases shape the body.10
  • Body-colored trim carries the exterior paint into the cabin.3
  • The folded roof hides beneath a cover painted to match the body.11
  • All factory cars are left-hand drive, including those sold in the United Kingdom and Japan.1

    Early steering wheels carry an engraved Fiat logo.1

  2. 2000 onward

    A third brake light appears on the trunk lid, initially on Lido and Riviera before spreading across the range.1

  3. 2001

    Milano brings a circular FIAT badge on the nose.7

  4. 2003 facelift

    A new grille, reshaped bumpers, larger front openings and a black license-plate mount distinguish the facelift.29

    Titanium-colored trim covers the center console, instrument panel, interior door handles and air vents.28
