The story

Built to bridge Golf and Sharan, the Touran's name joins "Tour" and "Sharan". Its first generation offered five or seven seats, 695 liters in five-seat form and up to 1,989 liters with the second row removed.123

    14 March: launch and 3,500 new jobs

    Auto 5000's new Wolfsburg factory created 3,500 jobs. The Touran reached the market on 14 March as a compact family, leisure and business car.45

    Seatbelt reminders unlock five stars

    The first Touran improved from four to five stars for adult protection after November's seatbelt-reminder changes earned one extra point.2

    Facelift brings a 168-hp 1.4 TSI

    The first generation gained a new face and rear lamps, plus a 1.4 TSI using both a turbocharger and a supercharger.16

    Common-rail TDI joins the big facelift

    2.6 million sold; TSI evo2 arrives

    The 20th anniversary brought the 148-hp 1.5 TSI evo2 with ACTplus cylinder management, while worldwide sales passed 2.6 million.5

How to spot one

Look for

  • 2015 body: slim headlights meet horizontal grille bars to form one continuous band.8
  • 2015 body: a sharp side crease runs through the door handles.8
  • 2015 body: long side windows, glossy B-pillars and slender C-pillars.8
  • 2010 facelift: rear lights split between the body sides and the tailgate.714

  1. After October 2004

    Projector fog lights gave way to reflector-type units.2

  2. 2009 model year

    Fog lamps became slightly oval, replacing the earlier round shape; their surrounding grilles changed too.2

  3. August 2010

    Second facelift retained the four doors but restyled the other body panels; rear lamps now extended into the tailgate.714

  4. Late 2010, China

    The Chinese update combined the new German-style nose with the earlier facelift's rear.2

  5. 2015

    New body is longer, wider and lower; slimmer headlights and flatter side glazing distinguish it from the old shape.8
