The story

John DeLorean wanted a two-seat sports car; GM gave Pontiac a Camaro to rework instead. Launched in 1967 to challenge the Mustang, the Firebird stood apart with a belt-driven overhead-cam six and Pontiac V8s.456

  1. 1967

February 23: Pontiac takes on Mustang

    The Firebird launches with a 215-hp Sprint six, 285-hp 326 HO and 325-hp 400. For 1968, the 350 HO rises to 320 hp.5

  2. 1969

    Trans Am joins the family

The WS4 package offers a 335-hp Ram Air III 400 or optional Ram Air IV. Just 689 hardtops and 8 convertibles leave the factory.57

  3. 1970

    Second generation: four flavors

Delayed by stamping problems until February 26, the second generation offers base Firebird, luxury Esprit, Formula and Trans Am; coupes only.45

  4. 1973

    Hand-built SD-455 arrives

The hand-assembled, 290-hp SD-455 arrives for Formula and Trans Am, with a reinforced block and dry-sump provisions. Just 1,296 are built across 1973-74.158

  5. 1982

Third generation cuts through the air

The third generation brings hidden headlights and a hatchback. Trans Am's Cd is 0.32; power spans a 90-hp Iron Duke four and 165-hp Crossfire 5.0 L V8.49

  6. 1989

    Turbo V6: 4.6 seconds to 60 mph

Buick's 3.8 L turbo V6 brings 250 hp to the 20th Anniversary Trans Am. It paces the Indianapolis 500 and runs 0-60 mph in 4.6 seconds.10

  7. 1993

Fourth generation: LT1 and six speeds

    LT1 Formula/Trans Am get 275 hp, 441 Nm and six speeds; the 160-hp 3.4 L V6 gets five. For 1994, the optional four-speed automatic gains electronic control.11

How to spot one

Look for

  • Third generation: wedge body, pop-up headlights and a curved glass hatch.20
  • Trans Am's hood bird became a factory option in 1973.5

Year by year

  1. 1967–1969

1967 has vent windows; 1968 deletes them and adds wraparound front signals and rear arrowhead markers; 1969 gets a new nose.56

  2. 1971–1972

1971 non-Trans Ams gain louvers behind the front wheels; 1972 uses elongated hexagonal grille mesh.4

  3. 1974–1975

1974 adds a shovel nose and wide slotted taillights; 1975 gets wraparound rear glass and moves turn signals into the grilles.3

  4. 1982–1985

1982 adds hidden lights and a glass hatch; 1985 Trans Am gets standard ground effects, hood extractor vents and a wraparound rear spoiler.420

  5. 1998

Revised nose gains twin air ports; pop-ups get dual lamps, front fenders gain vents and rear lights get honeycomb covers with round reverse lamps.11

Don’t confuse it with

  • Chevrolet Camaro

On third-gen cars, Firebird's retractable headlights and rounded hood/fenders provide the clearest distinction.9

  • Regular Firebird with Special Edition-style trim

Gold detailing alone cannot verify a Special Edition; the same look can be added to a regular Firebird.15

  • Firehawk / WS6

1999–2002 Firehawk: two big hood nostrils versus WS6's four; confirm WU6 or WS6 on the option label.1417
