The story

GMC renamed its Suburban Yukon XL for 2000 to build a distinct identity. Its long-wheelbase formula pairs family space with towing muscle; the 2021 redesign added independent rear suspension to lower the floor for people and cargo.345

    GMC renames its largest SUV. The 285-hp 5.3-liter 4WD model runs 0–60 mph in 9.1 seconds, beating the V10 Ford Excursion's 10.1.6

  2. 2001

    Denali XL: 320 hp and full-time AWD

    The first XL Denali brings luxury trim, a 6.0-liter V8, standard full-time AWD and Autoride adaptive dampers.13

  3. 2003

    Quadrasteer turns all four wheels

    Quadrasteer reaches the XL 2500, with rear wheels counter-steering at low speeds. The extra hardware makes the rear body five inches wider.12

    GMT900 era: 2007–2014

    The GMT900 era spans 2007–2014. The 2012 XL 2500's 6.0-liter V8 is factory-rated at 352 hp.7

    The Suburban's GMC cousin gains a redesigned dashboard. The Denali's 6.2-liter V8 adopts direct injection.8

    Independent rear suspension arrives

    The XL's wheelbase grows four inches for more third-row room; independent rear suspension lowers the floor. A new 3.0-liter turbodiesel makes 277 hp.5

    Denali Ultimate becomes a trim

    Denali Ultimate graduates from a package to a top trim, with massaging front seats and optional Super Cruise.510

  9. 2025

    305-hp diesel, 16.8-inch screen

    Diesel output rises from 277 to 305 hp; a new dash gets a 16.8-inch screen. Elevation replaces SLE/SLT, while AT4 Ultimate joins.11

Look for

  • On 2015 models, the XL is 20.4 inches longer overall than the regular Yukon.8
  • Early XLs offer side-opening cargo doors or an aluminum liftgate with separately opening glass.1
  • Early 2500s reveal their heavy-duty chassis through eight-lug wheels.4
  • The 2015 redesign hides the rear wiper beneath the roof spoiler.17
  • For 2021, Denali uses a larger, more intricate chrome grille.5
