The story

Born in 1957 to challenge British sport bikes, the Sportster XL paired an 883cc overhead-valve V-twin with a four-speed unit gearbox. Each valve got its own camshaft.15

    883cc XL takes on the British

    The XL debuts with an overhead-valve 883cc V-twin, a claimed 40 hp and an estimated 161 km/h top speed.15

  2. 1972

    Ironhead grows to 1000cc

    The 900cc Ironhead becomes a 1000cc model, with 61 hp claimed and a 187 km/h top speed.4

  3. 1986

    Evolution replaces the Ironhead

    The 1957-1985 Ironhead gives way to 883cc and 1100cc Evolution engines; the 1200cc option replaces the 1100 in 1988.4

  4. 2004

    Rubber mounts calm the shakes

    A redesigned frame uses rubber engine mounts to cut vibration.4

  5. 2014

    Bigger brakes, ABS and new electronics

    Larger brakes and optional ABS arrive alongside a new wiring harness, keyless entry and a gear-indicator speedometer.4

    Euro 5 ends European air-cooled sales

    The original line leaves Europe after its engine fails Euro 5 emissions limits.46

    Sportster S: 121 hp, liquid cooling

    The Revolution Max 1250T brings 121 hp and liquid cooling; its engine carries chassis loads in place of a traditional frame.24

    Nightster adds a liquid-cooled 975cc V-twin with 90 hp; the last air-cooled Sportster leaves York, Pennsylvania, on November 18.67

    Air-cooled return announced for 2027

    A May announcement sets out plans to revive the air-cooled Sportster in 2027 as an affordable entry model.6

How to spot one

Look for

  • Early models wear rubber fork gaiters, fitted from 1957 through 1970.12
  • Ironhead cylinder heads change from silver to black paint in 1969.412
  • 2022 Nightster: exposed rear shocks and a walnut-shaped airbox cover.7
  • Sportster S: capsule-shaped headlight and a massive front tire.2

  1. 1973 / 1975 / 1979

    Front drums give way to discs in 1973; the shifter moves left in 1975; a rear disc replaces the drum in 1979.412

  2. 1976–1982 commemoratives

    1976 Bicentennial decals; 1977 Confederate flag decals; 1978 black/gold 75th Anniversary trim; 1982 silver/black or orange/black 25th Anniversary paint.312

  3. 1991–1993

    Final drive switches from chain to belt on 883 Deluxe and 1200 models in 1991, then across the range in 1993.4

  4. 2003

    100th Anniversary editions have special paint and plaques on sheet metal, the speedometer housing and engine.4

  5. 2004

    The rubber-mounted redesign hides the battery and exhaust crossover, and smooths the oil tank.34

  6. 2025

    Sportster S gains a black engine, red cover lettering and red plug wires; rear wheel travel rises from 50.8 to 81.2 mm.10
