The story

Sierra gave GMC's full-size pickups their own name for 1988, graduating from a C/K trim. For 2019, it added MultiPro's six tailgate positions and CarbonPro, the first carbon-fiber bed on a mass-produced pickup.4567

    Sierra takes over from C/K

    Sierra graduated from a C/K trim name to GMC's full-size pickup identity with GMT400, while Chevrolet kept C/K branding.45

  2. 1999

    GMT800 makes the third door standard

    Extended cabs gained a standard right-side access door; Wideside and flared Sportside beds were offered while dealers kept the old design on sale.15

  3. 2002

    Quadrasteer tightens Denali's turning circle

    C3 became Denali, and standard Quadrasteer cut the turning-circle diameter from 47.3 to 37.4 feet.18

    GMT900 arrives; Classic stays alongside

    The new Sierra brought a redesigned body, cabin, frame and suspension, while the previous GMT800 survived as the 2007 Sierra Classic.5

    K2XX brings three new EcoTec3 engines

    All three EcoTec3 engines combined direct injection, cylinder shutoff and variable valve timing, with six-speed automatics across the range.59

How to spot one

Look for

  • GMT400 Sierras: flush door glass, no vent windows and a curved grille flush with the body.3
  • 2007 Sierra: square-jawed nose, a wide hood and a prominent grille.12
  • 2016 Sierra 1500: signature LED headlamp lighting and a redesigned grille.15
  • On 2019 trucks, a split-folding tailgate helps distinguish the Sierra from the Silverado.6
  • Sierra EV: a grille-shaped shield and illuminated GMC letters are the front-end signature.2
