The story

BMW built the Compact as a Golf-class entry model for younger buyers. Across E36 and E46 generations, the three-door hatch kept a longitudinal engine and rear-wheel drive while most hatchback rivals powered the front wheels.14

    Wolfgang Reitzle asked Peter Gabath to shorten the tail. The E36 reached dealers in April with space-saving, E30-style semi-trailing rear arms.145

    US 318ti faces the Integra GS-R

    The US 318ti opened at a $19,900 base price. Car and Driver favored the Acura Integra GS-R, but judged the hatch a BMW for tighter budgets.67

  3. 1996

    318ti trades its M42 for the M44

    The US 318ti swapped its 1.8 L M42 for the OBD-II-compatible 1.9 L M44, still rated at 138 hp. An E36 facelift followed for model year 1997.16

    323ti: 168 hp from the M52 six

    A 2.5 L straight-six topped the E36 range: 245 Nm, 0–100 km/h in 7.8 seconds and a 230 km/h maximum.18

    318ti Sport takes second for handling

    In Car and Driver's under-$30,000 handling test, the 318ti Sport finished behind the Honda Prelude SH and ahead of the Mazda MX-5 Miata.9

    1.9 L 316i; US imports bow out

    The 316i gained a 1.9 L engine as North American imports ended after poor sales; the US 318ti would later gain a cult following.1810

  7. 2001

    E46 launches with Valvetronic

    The E46 arrived in June with separate front lamps, multilink rear suspension and BMW's first Valvetronic four-cylinder engines.21112

  8. 2003

    325ti gets six speeds; 318td joins

    A six-speed manual and optional SMG arrived for the 325ti. The facelift also brought the 318td: a 2.0 L turbo diesel with 114 hp and 280 Nm.1212

  9. 2004

    N46 update, then the 1 Series

    The 318ti's N42 gave way to the N46. E46 production ended in December after almost 200,000 cars, with the 1 Series taking over.111

How to spot one

Look for

  • E36: a familiar 3 Series nose, then a stubby hatchback tail with a tiny horizontal deck.16
  • E46: separate, round headlights create a button-eye face.2
  • Early E46: clear rear lamps expose separate lights in silver housings at the outer body corners.2

    Club Sport's deeper spoiler, larger skirts and 16-inch wheels joined the Sport package; its special mirrors did not.16

  2. 1997 model year (E36)

    Thicker chrome kidney-grille surrounds and redesigned side turn-signal repeaters identify the facelift.18

  3. 1997 model year (E36)

    Tailgate trim became body color; standard lower bumpers and rocker panels turned black instead of anthracite.18

  4. 2003 (E46)

    Red rear-light units replaced the clear silver-backed lamps, and the hatch handle became wider.2
