La storia

Pensata per inserirsi tra Ford Mustang e Ford Thunderbird, la Charger del 1966 trasformava la meccanica della Coronet in una fastback con fari a scomparsa, quattro sedili singoli e una console che arrivava fino ai posti posteriori.45

    Dalla show car alla Charger II

    Alla show car del 1964 seguirono l’allestimento Dart Charger e il concept Charger II del 1965, che anticipò il design della versione di serie del 1966.5

    Debutta la fastback con quattro sedili singoli

    La meccanica della Coronet si vestì di una carrozzeria fastback e fari a scomparsa; tra i V8 c’erano il 318 da 230 CV, il 383 da 325 CV e l’Hemi da 425 CV.56

    Linee a bottiglia di Coca-Cola e 440 R/T

    Il restyling di Richard Sias introdusse in gamma uno slant-six da 145 CV; le R/T montavano di serie il 440 Magnum da 375 CV o, a richiesta, il 426 Hemi da 425 CV.457

    Daytona gira a Talladega a 322,6 km/h

    Buddy Baker portò una Charger Daytona a compiere a Talladega il primo giro su circuito chiuso cronometrato ufficialmente oltre i 322 km/h, spingendosi poi fino a 322,6 km/h.18

    1.000 Charger GLHS da 175 CV

    Shelby trasformò le ultime 1.000 Charger L-body in modelli GLHS; il turbo 2,2 litri con intercooler erogava 175 CV e 237 Nm.59

    La berlina V8 sovralimentata da 6,2 litri ha percorso lo 0–60 mph in 3,4 secondi nei test; Dodge dichiarava una velocità massima di 328 km/h.2

    A dicembre terminò la produzione della berlina: i V6 arrivavano a 300 CV; tra i V8 figuravano la R/T da 370 CV, la Scat Pack da 485 CV e la King Daytona da 807 CV, prodotta in 300 esemplari.101112
