The story

Named for kanmuri, Japanese for crown, the Camry was developed for export to replace the Corona and challenge the Honda Accord. Its independent 1982 debut brought Toyota's first transverse-engine, front-wheel-drive layout.15

How to spot one

Look for

  • Camry relatives wore Vista, Scepter, Vienta, Apollo and Altis badges; Aurion has a different nose and tail.56
  • 1991–1996 generation: wraparound lights and a wedge profile; wagons use two rear wipers.1
  • Early regular XV40: three-bar grille, stepped hood and trunk.6
  • 2018 LE/XLE versus SE/XSE: different noses, tails, sills and wheels, designed to stand apart at 200 yards.7
  • 2025 generation: hammerhead nose and slim LED headlights, running lights and taillights.10

Year by year

  1. 1995 facelift

The XV10 gains a body-color panel between the taillights, replacing the red or black strip used on 1992–1994 cars.17

  2. 2005 (U.S.)

Chrome grille on mainstream trims, blacked-out grille on SE; reshaped lights and front bumper, plus new wheels.11

  3. January 2009 (XV40)

The regular model gets larger front intakes and projector headlights; LED taillights spread beyond the hybrid.6

  4. 2015 (XV50)

The XV50 receives a major exterior restyle and a 10 mm wider track, while retaining its generation designation.1223

  5. 2025

A hammerhead front end, slim LED lights and Beyond Zero badging accompany the move to hybrid-only power.10

Don’t confuse it with

  • Toyota Scepter (XV10)

1992–1994 headlights wrap around and incorporate fog lights; Scepter trunk trim and fender markers are further clues.17

  • Toyota Aurion (XV40)

It shares Camry doors, roof and side glass. Different front and rear fascias, a deep grille and dual exhausts identify the Aurion.6
