The story

After GM acquired Hummer brand rights in 1999, the H2 aimed to make the H1 formula more practical and affordable. It used a modified GMT800 truck chassis with a three-piece ladder frame.3456

    GM secures the Hummer name

    The December agreement gave GM worldwide Hummer brand rights, setting up an H2 designed to be more practical and affordable than the H1.34

  2. 2000

    Detroit gets the H2 concept

    The H2 debuted at the Detroit Auto Show as an SUV concept, with production planned for 2002 and the 2003 model year.37

  3. 2001

    Schwarzenegger takes the SUT down Broadway

    The H2 SUT concept made its New York debut with Schwarzenegger at the wheel and Mayor Giuliani alongside.3

  4. 2002

    Mishawaka starts building the H2

    AM General began H2 assembly in Mishawaka, Indiana. The 2003 SUV launched with a 316-hp 6.0 L V8 and standard 35-inch tires.18

  5. 2005

    SUT joins; the V8 reaches 325 hp

    The H2 SUT brought a pickup bed and folding Midgate; both bodies' 6.0 L V8 now delivered 325 hp and 495 Nm.910

  6. 2006

    Second straight Baja 1000 class win

    Josh Hall drove the entire Baja 1000 himself, beating the nearest Stock Full rival by more than five hours for the H2's second straight class win.11

    393 hp, six speeds and a new cabin

    SUV and SUT gained a 6.2 L V8, six-speed automatic and redesigned cabin; towing capacity increased from 2,948 to 3,629 kg.69

    Sales plunge; Mishawaka stops

    US H2 sales fell from 34,529 in 2003 to 6,095 in 2008. Mishawaka assembly halted in December; a restart hinged on a proposed Hummer sale.912
