The story

Conceived to replace the Tracker and S-10 Blazer, the original Equinox put five seats on a car-type chassis. Its rear bench slid 8 inches to swap rear legroom for cargo space.23

  1. 2005

A rear bench with 8 inches of travel

The five-seat Equinox debuts on a car-type chassis, with a rear bench that slides 8 inches to favor rear legroom or cargo space.3

  2. 2008

Sport: 264 hp and 6.9 seconds to 60 mph

The Sport adds a 3.6-liter DOHC V6 and six-speed automatic; the AWD version reaches 60 mph in 6.9 seconds in testing.24

  3. 2010

    Canada-built redesign, 182-hp four

The second generation keeps the sliding bench for rear legroom or cargo; its 182-hp 2.4-liter four tests at 8.7 seconds to 60 mph and 18 mpg.56

  4. 2014

119 hydrogen vehicles pass 3 million miles

Launched in 2007, Project Driveway's 119 hydrogen-powered Equinox vehicles pass 3 million miles of real-world driving by May 2014.1

  5. 2018

New architecture, about 181 kg lighter

Chief engineer Mark Cieslak's 2018 redesign uses a smaller body, new architecture and an aluminum hood; Chevrolet claims about 181 kg less mass for the base model.7

  6. 2018

A 137-hp diesel joins the range

The 1.6-liter TD brings 137 hp and 325 Nm through a six-speed automatic; it reaches 60 mph in 9.0 seconds in testing.8

  7. 2022

RS arrives; only the 1.5-liter remains

The new RS sits between LT and Premier. A facelift brings LED headlights, while the only powertrain is a 170-hp 1.5-liter turbo with a six-speed automatic.9

  8. 2025

Silverado looks for the sales workhorse

Chevy's bestselling non-pickup gets a Silverado-inspired nose; its 175-hp turbo four pairs with a CVT in FWD models or an eight-speed automatic with AWD.10

How to spot one

Look for

  • 2010 model: a thick, forward-leaning pillar behind the rear doors stands out in profile.6
  • 2018 diesel: large windows and a low beltline give the body a generous glass area.8
  • 2025 model: a Silverado-inspired nose and squared wheel openings give it a trucklike face.10
  • 2025 model: look for large boomerang-shaped rear lamps.15

Year by year

  1. 2006

LS front bumpers changed from black to body color; LT exterior mirrors also became body-colored.2

  2. 2010

New styling featured thick, forward-leaning C-pillars; early cars wore GM front-door badges that were later deleted.256

  3. 2016

Revised grille, front fascia and taillights, plus projector headlights; V6s gained redesigned twin chrome exhaust tips.2

  4. 2017

LTZ became Premier, and the Equinox badge moved from the right side of the liftgate to the left.2

  5. 2022

Revised front and rear fasciae, a new grille and LED headlights/running lights; RS joined with 19-inch Dark Android wheels.9

  6. 2025

A Silverado-inspired nose, squared wheel openings and an optional contrasting roof identify the redesign.10

Don’t confuse it with

  • Chevrolet Traverse

The 2010 Equinox has a very similar face, but its thick, forward-leaning C-pillar is a profile clue; the Traverse is larger.6

  • Pontiac Torrent

The body twin has different front and rear styling; Torrent GXP versions add twin hood scoops.2

  • Equinox EV

The electric model has its own design and underpinnings while sharing the Equinox name.2
