AMCは1983年、Cherokeeの後継車を計画しました。XJCプロジェクトではLarry Shinoda、Alain Clenet、Giorgetto Giugiaroが外部デザイン案を提出。多くのSUVが独立したフレームを使っていた1992年、ユニボディ構造のGrand Cherokeeが登場しました。3
